THE "SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION WORKSHOPS"

What is sustainable consumption?

Sustainable consumption involves using resources efficiently to meet current needs without compromising the needs of future generations. It emphasizes waste reduction, energy conservation, and the selection of eco-friendly products. This approach promotes environmental protection, social equity, and economic well-being by encouraging responsible purchasing and lifestyle choices, thereby contributing to long-term planetary and human health.

What is the “Sustainable Consumption Workshops” project?

The ecological imperative requires shifting the economy toward more environmentally friendly modes of production, distribution, consumption, and living in order to foster a new way of “living together.” However, do the labels offered to consumers truly meet their expectations? The University of Montpellier has assembled an interdisciplinary team to study the concept of sustainable consumption and approaches to public policy and private initiatives. The project aims to catalog the discourse and practices surrounding sustainable consumption to define its uses, benefits, costs, and standards, thereby enabling the development of public policies and private sector practices that achieve these objectives. The goal is not only to study these voluntary actions throughout the consumption process (from production through purchase and use to the “disposal” phase), but also to do so through a dual lens: the organizational perspective and that of consumer practices and behaviors.
