EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON CONSUMER LAW

February 27 & 28, 2025 – Montpellier

International Association for Consumer Law

The International Association for Consumer Law was founded with the aim of fostering connections by promoting joint reflection and research on the evolution of consumer relations and their legal framework in different regions of the world. Cooperation among institutions, universities, consumer organizations, and experts is encouraged in order to facilitate and promote research and education in the field of consumer law.

The association has decided to hold a European regional conference in Montpellier on Thursday, February 27, and Friday, February 28, 2025, to enable experts in the field to present their work, discuss the future of consumer law, and pay tribute to Professor Jean Calais Auloy, who taught at the University of Montpellier, where he established the research team specializing in this field.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Two specific topics will be examined, and time will be set aside for topics freely proposed by the speakers. References to the work of Professor Jean Calais Auloy are encouraged.

Thursday, February 27 – morning
CONSUMER INFORMATION

The consumer relationship is, by its very nature, an unequal one—between an expert and a layperson, a professional whose economic interests justify their efforts and a consumer constrained by their limited knowledge, immediate needs, impulses, and so on.

However, informing consumers about their rights is essential to ensuring the effectiveness of consumer law: in this regard, a wide range of methods and channels are used, including codification, websites, consultations with consumer associations, explanations provided by government authorities, and mediation by industry representatives, among others.

Thursday, February 27 – afternoon
NEW CONSUMPTION PATTERNS AND UNFAIR COMMERCIAL PRACTICES

Due in part to the emergence of new technologies, new consumption patterns are emerging, whether driven by consumers, government agencies, or businesses. These new offerings can give rise to new practices—some of which may be unfair or difficult to understand—for which general consumer law may or may not prove effective in regulating the market and protecting consumers.

Friday, February 28 – Morning
OPEN DISCUSSIONS AND PRESENTATIONS OF WORKSHOP PROJECTS

Friday morning will be devoted to open presentations and institutional announcements from the association and the University of Montpellier. Early-career and established researchers will also have the opportunity to present the results of their research and the workshops taking place concurrently with the conference.
